If you like food, and Cleveland, and chefs, and Cleveland chefs, you will probably be interested in going to next week's program at Mentor Public Library. Maria Isabella, author of "In the Kitchen with Cleveland's Favorite Chefs," will be part of a program from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4. Not only will she speak about her book and the chefs featured, but there also will be food involved.

People can get a peek into the kitchen of Cleveland’s favorite chefs at Mentor Library MENTOR, Ohio… Want to know what Michael Symon cooks in his own kitchen for his friends and family? Or what Bar Cleveland chef Zachary Bruell makes for dessert?
 People can find out that and more when they meet Maria Isabella on Monday, Nov. 4 at the Mentor Public Library’s Main Branch. Isabella interviewed and compiled more than 100 recipes from 35 of the area’s most successful and famous chefs to write her book, “In the Kitchen with Cleveland’s Favorite Chefs.” Isabella considers herself a self-professed, wannabe foodie. “Albeit, not the snobby kind,” she said. Her talk at the library will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Main Branch’s James R. Garfield Room. Isabella will discuss her book and share her experiences with some of the chefs she wrote about. Then she will demonstrate two simple appetizer recipes that people can enjoy.
 She will also take questions from the audience. Amanda Densmore, the manager of MPL’s adult reference department, said she was excited to welcome Isabella to the library. “I'm sure she'll have some fun stories to dish about Cleveland's favorite chefs, and it will be great to try some simple appetizers,” Densmore said. A book sale and signing will follow Isabella’s presentation. Isabella’s talk is part of the Monday University series, which brings new guest speakers to the library each month to entertain and educate lifelong learners. The program is free and open to the public. April 2011 will mark the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. To commemorate this event in America’s past, local historian Harold George will present “Life of a Civil War Soldier 1861-1865,” at the next meeting of the Willoughby Historical Society at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Willoughby Public Library, 30 Public Square. He will discuss what a soldier’s life was like, including the techniques used for recruiting volunteers into the Union Army, the uniforms and the everyday personal equipment of the typical soldier and camp life. Weaponry and care of the wounded and those killed also will be discussed.

The program "Fun With Retro Toys" will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Perry Public Library, 3753 Main St. Jason Williams opened his Madison store, Spaceman Floyd’s Cosmic Toys, in mid-August. For the past several years, AARP volunteers and staff have worked to help pass a health care law that benefit members and society as a whole. Now, AARP is focusing efforts on educating its members and the public on the contents of the recently passed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The legislation is more than 2,000 pages and is crammed with new benefits, rules, penalties and projects, spread out over many years. The goal is to educate consumers by answering the three most frequently asked questions: What does this mean to me? What do I get? What, if anything, do I need to do? It is administrated by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. The Mentor Public Library will be loaning Kill-A-Watt EZ meter devices to their patrons for a two-week period. The service is an expansion of the library’s Go Green initiative along with the ongoing recycling programs already in place at the library. The devices were donated by the Friends of the Library. The patrons will be able to take the device home and plug it into any household appliance to find out exactly how much energy the appliance uses and how much it costs the homeowner. According to the Kill-A-Watt EZ meter manufacturer P3 International website, the meters will empower consumers on their electric bills. The meters are accurate to within 0.2 percent.

Rock-N-Roll story time is just for children 18 months to 3 years old and their caregivers. Madison Public Library has received a 2010 Dollar General Youth Literacy Grant to fund six reading parties during the 2010-11 school year. The programs are for children ages 3 to 7 with their caregivers. The themed parties are Trucks, Trains, & Transformers; Elephant & Piggie; Princesses & Ponies; Fancy Nancy; Alphabet Soup; and Star Wars. The audience-participation murder mystery-comedy will be open to the public, and tickets are $10 each. Tickets can be purchased at the library beginning Sept. 22.
