Geauga County Public Library joins SearchOhio consortium

Geauga County Public Library patrons now have access to more than 66 million items, thanks to the system's recent connection with the SearchOhio consortium. Library users in Geauga County can now use materials from public libraries across Ohio, in addition to OhioLINK.

Below, the news release from the Geauga County Public Library:
Geauga County Public Library has joined the SearchOhio consortium of libraries, giving all GCPL card-carrying patrons access to a whole new world of materials. About 66.5 million items.
“We are extremely pleased to be able offer our patrons this kind of resource depth,” says
Deborah F. O’Connor, Director of Geauga County Public Library. “Geauga taxpayers didn’t spend a dime, and their collection expanded 100 fold. There is no need to purchase single-use materials when we take advantage of the collections from around Ohio. And, the relationship is reciprocal; other libraries have access to our collection of about a half a million materials. When we all share our resources, everyone wins. It’s exciting to consider the vast quantity of books, periodicals, movies and music we all can enjoy.”
SearchOhio membership gives our patrons access to virtually all the items from 16 Ohio public libraries. It also allows our patrons access to the OhioLINK catalog. OhioLINK is a consortium of 88 Ohio college and university libraries and the State Library of Ohio. It provides access to approximately 50 million books and other library materials.
GCPL is no longer using MORE to process requests of items not available in our catalog. However, MORE requests that had been placed prior to our SearchOhio launch date (Sept. 24, 2013), are being honored. You may check the status of your MORE holds / requests, or feel free to contact your local Geauga County Public Library location to speak with a librarian about any questions you may have.
To begin using SearchOhio, log into your account and begin searching for an item by typing a word or author name into the search field. To expand your search outside of the GCPL catalog, click the SearchOhio or OhioLINK buttons at the top right-hand corner of your page, just beneath the Geauga County Public Library logo.
Patrons with any questions regarding how to access SearchOhio or OhioLINK should contact any Geauga County Public Library location and speak with a staff member.

Geauga County Public Library book sale at Great Geauga County Fair

Geauga County Public Library's Friends of the Bookmobile are sponsoring a sale of gently used library materials during the Great Geauga County Fair, Aug. 29 through Sept. 2. Fairgoers can attend the sale in the book barn (next to the free parking area by Gate 1), leave their selections with library staff and volunteers, and pick up their materials when they leave the fair.

According to a news release:
GCPL has been expanding its collection over the past year, resulting in extra weeding efforts to make room for new materials. The upshot of this practice is that hundreds of additional fiction and nonfiction titles are now available for people to acquire and add into their personal collections. Also, a wide variety of DVDs and CDs will be on the shelves.

Monday is “bag day,” when $3 buys people a bag filled with as many books as it will hold.

“The book sale at the fair is popular every year,” says Bookmobile Manager Jane Attina, “but this year’s selection is among the most robust I’ve ever seen. This is a great time to stock up on all kinds of reading material.”

Geauga County Public Library introducing new catalog

Information from a Geauga County Public Library news release:

Patrons will be able to create their own PINs in new catalog
Current PINs will not transfer to new system; patrons may easily set their own
Geauga County Public Library is introducing Encore, a new, enhanced catalog, to patrons May 22. The new system offers upgraded functionality, including the ability for patrons with active library cards to establish their own PINs (Personal Identification Numbers) the first time they log into the new system. Current PINs will not automatically transfer.

In the current catalog environment, patrons had been required to rely on library staff to set their PINs. The new system, however, empowers patrons to set their own, which saves time and provides the immediate ability to place holds in catalog collection.

Setting a new PIN is simple. When the new catalog system is live on May 22, patrons will be able to log into the new Encore catalog and will be prompted to create a PIN by entering a combination of at least four letters and/or numbers. They should record it for safekeeping, and use it whenever they want to access their library account.

Additionally, patron-built lists will not automatically migrate to the new environment. Users will need to access their current accounts and print any lists they have built. Any suspended holds will become automatically active in the new system.

Instructions for establishing PINs, printing lists and viewing suspended holds are available at www.geaugalibrary.net.

Meet local author Brian McClellan at Geauga West Library for his debut book launch

Meet local author Brian McClellan at Geauga West Library for his debut book launch
Author to award prizes to three high-school students for essay contest
Geauga County – March 22, 2013 – Geauga County Public Library and the Geauga County Library Foundation are pleased to celebrate the debut novel of Geauga County’s newest novelist.
What:    Book launch for Promise of Blood
High-school writing contest prizes awarded for essay on “What’s Your Big Dream?”
Where:                   Geauga West Library
When:    Thursday, April 18, 6:30 p.m.
Former West Geauga High School student Brian McClellan (class of 2004) had a dream when he was 16 to become a successful novelist. Nearly ten years later, he’s living his dream. His first epic fantasy novel, Promise of Blood, is being published internationally by Orbit April 16, 2013. He’s working on two other books to complete the trilogy.
Meet Brian at his book launch party at Geauga West Library. He will read a short excerpt of his book at 7 p.m. and be available to sign copies for purchase ($23.99).
Additionally, Brian will award prizes to the top three local high-school students for their essays on the topic: “What’s Your Big Dream?” Students were asked to submit short essays that describe their aspirations and how they overcome their obstacles. Brian, who judged the essays, was impressed with the energy and quality of writing. “Looking over these essays reminded me of my time in high school,” McClellan says, “when I would hang out in libraries and read everything I could get my hands on, especially fantasy and science fiction. I dreamed about the time when I would hopefully realize my big dream, seeing my novels published, read and enjoyed. I’m thrilled to be taking that big step now. I hope the young writers I judged will also realize their dreams.”
Students from all of Geauga County were encouraged to enter the contest to sharpen their writing skills and have a chance to win some great prizes including an iPod Touch and iTunes gift cards. The contest is sponsored by the Geauga County Library Foundation.
